Grouped Rules

How to Use Grouped Rules in Forms

Grouped rules let you create smarter forms by combining multiple conditions inside a single rule. Instead of building multiple separate rules, you can nest conditions to handle complex logic efficiently. This keeps your forms simple, organized, and powerful.

What Are Grouped Rules?

Grouped rules expand on standard if-then logic. With grouped rules, you can:

  • Combine multiple conditions in one rule using AND or OR operators
  • Nest multiple conditions inside a single group
  • Trigger one action based on multiple criteria

For example:

  • If a respondent selects “Business Owner” and has more than 10 employees, then show “Schedule a Demo”
  • If a respondent selects “Student” or “Freelancer,” show “Sign Up for Newsletter”

This allows you to handle complex scenarios without creating multiple rules.

How to Set Up Grouped Rules in Formester

Step 1: Open Your Form

Log in to your Formester dashboard and open the form where you want to add grouped rules.

Step 2: Go to Advanced Settings

Click Advanced → Form Control → Rules.

Step 3: Add a New Rule

Click Add Rule. In the rule builder:

  • Add Group – Click this to start a new group of conditions.
  • Operator – Select AND or OR to combine conditions within the group.
  • Field – Choose the field to apply the condition to.
  • Condition – Select the operator (equals, not equals, greater than, less than, empty).
  • Value – Define the value the condition should check for.

You can add multiple conditions inside the same group. Groups can also be nested to create advanced logic that reacts precisely to your respondents’ answers.

Step 4: Define the Action

Choose what happens when the grouped conditions are met: show/hide a field, skip to a page, or display a thank you message.

Step 5: Save and Preview

Click Save and preview your form to see the grouped rules in action.

Example Use Cases

  1. Event Registration
  • If attendee selects “VIP” and “Workshop A,” show “VIP Workshop A Welcome Kit”
  • If attendee selects “Regular” or “Workshop B,” show “Standard Welcome Kit”
  1. Job Applications
  • If applicant selects “Manager” and “More than 5 years experience,” show “Leadership Assessment”
  • If applicant selects “Intern” or “Less than 1 year experience,” show “Introductory Questionnaire”

This ensures users see only relevant fields while keeping your rules organized.

Why Use Grouped Rules

  • Simpler Rule Management: Nest multiple conditions in a single rule
  • Flexible Forms: Combine conditions using AND/OR operators
  • Higher Completion Rates: Respondents see only what applies to them
  • Accurate Data: Collect relevant answers efficiently

Final Thoughts

Grouped rules take conditional logic further by allowing nested conditions and flexible operators. Formester’s Add Group button makes creating multi-condition rules simple and powerful. Whether you’re gathering feedback, managing registrations, or screening candidates, grouped rules keep your forms dynamic, organized, and precise.
